Lightyear Grillmaster BBQ Tool Bundle: Thermometer, Hammer & Brush

I picked up this starter pack that comes with a meat tenderizing hammer, a silicone basting brush, and an instant-read meat thermometer.

The thermometer is super quick and accurate. I even tested it against my much more expensive one, and it held up perfectly. The stainless steel tenderizer is a beast—really solid and heavy-duty, actually nicer than my expensive one. The basting brush is just your standard silicone brush, but it gets the job done.

This set is absolutely perfect for an indoor kitchen, but I do wish the 10” thermometer probe and the brush handle were a bit longer. If you are using them on a hot outdoor grill, your hands can get a little too close to the heat for comfort. Price-wise, it was $38 at the time, which is pretty much what you would pay if you bought everything separately. It is a decent deal, though not a massive steal. Overall, it is a really nice, reliable set if you are starting out on your own!

For rookies like me on the grill this Lightyear Grillmaster 3-Piece Starter pack is exactly what we need to simplify our beginnings behind the grill. This kit includes a battery powered meat thermometer; a heavy weight meat tenderizer; and a saucing brush, all made well with durable materials.

The meat tenderizer is made of heavy aluminum, it feels great in the hands. The saucing brush looks amazing in red and it is very flexible, perfect to spread just about any sauce on your meats. Then you also get a waterproof meat thermometer, that has an easy to follow instructions sheet included in the package, equipped with pre installed batteries, and useful overlay print/ silkscreen on the thermometer itself with some of the more popular meats listed and to what temperature you should cook them too, all in plain sight when using it.

It all cleans up easily and effortlessly, especially the brush and the tenderizer. The thermometer you want to wipe after each use of course.

This is a great little starter kit.

Extremely heavy duty and well made of stainless steel material meat hammer. I'll never need another as this meat hammer could be used as a medieval storm the castle type weapon. Really a heavy duty piece of kitchen equipment that makes short work of tenderizing any type of meat. Nice instant-read thermometer that's easy to carry in a shirt pocket or apron pocket. Just install batteries and flip the probe out to turn it on or flip it in to turn off. I really like the silicone basting brush since it is a one piece design and won't come apart like some of the two piece ones do. Everything according to the item description is dishwasher safe, however, I would never take a chance of putting any of my instant read thermometers in the dishwasher. Maybe wash by had just as easily. 5 stars

So we actually needed all three of these items and it was great to find them all in one kit. Good value to purchase together. Here is what I like about each:

Meat Hammer — doesn' have a bunch of seams so it’s easy to clean, nicely weighted so it too heavy or not too light, versatile (just used it to crack peppercorns for a recipe, flat edge as well as spiked edge makes it useful for a variety of meats.

Brush — having no seams between materials makes it so easy to clean for a brush, nice long handle length for grill use, silicone construction makes it good for high temps.

Thermometer — instant read is great, has target temps for several meats on the unit, can recalibrate if needed (instructions included), battery included, turns on and off by unlatching/latching which makes it easy to use, can convert temps with a button.

You get a meat smasher, thermometer, and basting brush in this kit. I don' quite understand how the meat smasher fits in – it's not strictly for grilling – but I needed a new meat smasher since the one I have was my Mom’s and I remember it going back to my childhood. It’s also ridiculously small and I use a metal espresso tamper or cast iron pan if I really need to smash something. The one that came with this kit is heavy, with a thick heavy handle, and the double-sided head has 2x2” areas-of-smash. Great since I was planning to make chicken parm and pork cutlet sandwiches this weekend.

I also really like the thermometer. I knew a guy who used to use one of these as a grill flipper so he could turn stuff and take the temperature at the same time. Maybe I’ll start doing that since this one has a handle. My other thermometers don' really have handles, they are just straight spikes with the display at one end. But it turns on when you open it – nice there’s no on/off button – has a backlit display for night-grilling (which is most of the grilling I do because I never get around to cooking until later in the evening) and has your safe internal temps imprinted on it, as well as a well done/medium/medium rare temps, poultry excluded.

The basting brush is, well, a basting brush, but I use those things all the time and it won' go unused. In fact I’ll probably throw out some of my other ones since this one seems more quality.

Nice little starter set or gift set for the grill obsessed person in your life. The mallet is great, I've actually already got another one from Lightyear, solid stainless steel with micro laser welds. They ho through the dishwasher no problem but I highly recommend using through a zip lock bag. If you're not using one of these to process your chicken before grilling or baking, that's probably the primary reason why you have tough chicken. I do a slightly moist marinade and then hammer it until it's an even 3/4 in. Knocking out those high spots really breaks the fibers down and gets rid of all that toughness that you would experience otherwise.

Second thing that makes tough chicken is over cooking so that's where the thermometer comes in. It's neat that it automatically turns on when you swivel out the probe and shuts back off the second you swivel it back. Decently fast reads but just pinching it it, did take a little while to normalize. Coming back to room temperature also took a minute but a quick bath under cold water brought it down almost instantly. Trust me when I say, rinse quick with soap immediately after use before stuff dries on otherwise it's a real pain in the butt to clean the probe. I really like that it uses a single AAA battery and not some weird button cell that's impossible to find and expensive to buy. I will be throwing a rechargeable AAA in there once the included battery that comes with it dies.

The basting brush is actually full size and has some weight to it. The silicone is nice because it doesn't absorb into the polyester brush heads like the old style used to do. It goes through the dishwasher no problem as well.

The Lightyear Grillmaster Starter Pack is an impressive set. The meat hammer is no joke. It feels heavy of the hand and you can really hammer the meat to your thickness of choice. It feels sturdy and durable with a nice grip. The best part is it can be cleaned in the dishwasher along with the brush. The meat thermometer is great too. You can choose between F or C. It is easy to clean and gives an accurate reading each time. This is a good value for your money and would make a great gift.

This is a nice grill starter pack for me, mainly because I didn' have a meat hammer, and had no idea how much I’d end up using it for tenderizing, which turns out to be very beneficial, especially with the price of even low grade meat any more. Also, the thermometer works really well, and the basting brush is pretty durable and a good backup for me since I already had one. Great starter pack that I definitely recommend.

very impressed with the quality of the product. The digital thermometer came with the battery installed and ready to go just by rotating the probe. Easy to calibrate in ice water for very accurate reading. The hammer was heavier than I expected, made from stainless steel and well balanced. Worked great on veal cutlet. The silicone baster has a steel (magnetic) stiffener, but it is completely sealed by the silicone, so no rust issues. Overall, a nice package.
